# Source

The Source stage is the first in the chain. Its SOURCE tab holds the **POSITION** card; its tone controls (Warmth, Brightness, Presence) sit on the [Tone](/antiverb/interface/tone) tab with the other pre-reverb tone controls and follow this stage's MIX, BYPASS and SOLO.

## POSITION

| Control | Range | Default | What it does |
| - | - | - | - |
| **distance** | 0.5 to 20 m | 1 m | Distance from source to listener. The level follows the inverse-distance law (each doubling lowers it by about 6 dB), with unity at 1 m, so 0.5 m is about 6 dB louder than the default. |
| **air absorption** | 0 to 200 % | 100 % | Scales a physical air-absorption model (ISO 9613-1, at 20 °C and 50 % relative humidity). Higher values take more high frequencies away as distance grows past 1 m. 0 % turns the loss off; 200 % exaggerates it. The effect is small below about 5 m. |

Both controls act on the source as it enters ANTIVERB: on the dry signal that the master **DRY / WET** blends back in and on the signal every reverb stage hears, so they work at any DRY / WET and whatever the Source MIX. A farther source makes the reverb quieter and darker along with the dry. They stay active while another stage is soloed; the Source **BYPASS** turns them off.

## What the Source MIX Does

Inside the chain the Source stage applies Warmth, Brightness and Presence, and a fixed low-pass at 18 kHz, to the signal on its way to Densification. The Source MIX crossfades between the untreated input and that signal, so at its default of 0 the tone controls are inaudible.
