# Space

> The feedback-delay-network late tail

# Space

The SPACE tab holds the late tail, a feedback delay network: a set of delay lines whose outputs are mixed and fed back into every line, so that each echo seeds the next and the echo density keeps rising as the tail decays. The lines' lengths follow the active **shape** on the DENSIFICATION tab, so changing profile changes the tail too.

On a stereo output the Space MIX crossfades from the signal entering the stage to the tail. On a multichannel output it sets the level of the Space object. See [Signal Chain](/antiverb/interface/signal-chain).

## ENGINE

| Control | Range | Default | What it does |
| - | - | - | - |
| **size** | 0.02 to 12 s | 1.5 s | Decay time (T60) of the mid band, the headline reverb time. |
| **density** | Low / Medium / High / Maximum | Maximum | 16 / 32 / 64 / 128 delay lines. More lines give a denser, smoother tail, and the CPU load rises with the line count. *EXPERT view.* |
| **pre-delay** | 0 to 200 ms | 0 ms | Gap between the signal entering the stage and the start of the tail. Changes crossfade to the new time, so automating it does not click. |

## T60 BANDS

Open **\[+] T60 BANDS** (EXPERT view). The tail decays at three rates, one per band. **size** sets the mid band; **low** and **high** set the outer bands on their own.

| Control | Range | Default | What it does |
| - | - | - | - |
| **low** | 0.02 to 12 s | 2.0 s | Decay time of the low band. |
| **high** | 0.02 to 12 s | 0.6 s | Decay time of the high band. A short high decay gives a dry-feeling, articulate tail. |
| **cross low** | 50 to 800 Hz | 177 Hz | Boundary between the low and mid bands. |
| **cross high** | 1 to 16 kHz | 5.66 kHz | Boundary between the mid and high bands. |

## DIFFUSER

Open **\[+] DIFFUSER** (EXPERT view). A nested allpass chain between the pre-delay and the delay lines smooths the onset of the tail.

| Control | Range | Default | What it does |
| - | - | - | - |
| **stages** | 1 to 8 | 8 | Number of allpass stages. |
| **length** | 1 to 30 ms | 10 ms | Longest allpass delay. |

## MODULATION

Open **\[+] MODULATION** (EXPERT view). Each delay line's length moves slowly, at its own rate between half and all of **rate**, so the tail's modes do not ring as metallic sweeps.

| Control | Range | Default | What it does |
| - | - | - | - |
| **rate** | 0.01 to 3 Hz | 0.15 Hz | Speed of the modulation. |
| **depth** | 0 to 2 % | 0.2 % | Modulation depth as a share of each line's length. |
| **organic** | off / on | off | Off uses a sine. On uses smoothed noise, so the motion does not repeat at a fixed rate and the tail has no periodic sweep. |

## MATRIX

The **colorless** toggle under **\[+] MATRIX** swaps in a different mix between the lines that gives a flatter, less coloured tail. It acts at Low and Medium density only (16 and 32 lines), does nothing at High and Maximum, and is off by default. Flipping it rebuilds the network with a crossfade.

## REFERENCE

The **\[+] REFERENCE** panel beside ENGINE (below it on a narrow window) is a printed reference for setting **size** and the bands. It lists typical mid-band T60 and pre-delay for 16 rooms, from an anechoic chamber to a Gothic cathedral, a logarithmic T60 scale, and absorption coefficients at 125 Hz, 500 Hz and 2 kHz for 12 materials. It does not read or change any control.

## MINIMAL View

In MINIMAL the tab shows **size** and **pre-delay** with two macros: **Decay Color** (the band decay times and crossovers) and **Motion** (the modulation rate, depth and organic switch).
