# Spatial Objects

On a stereo output the SPATIAL tab has no audible effect. On an output of more than two channels (up to 16), ANTIVERB renders to every output, and this tab decides where each part of the sound sits. The speaker rig itself is covered in [Speaker Layout](/antiverb/interface/speaker-layout).

## Panning

Panning is VBAP (vector-base amplitude panning), with MDAP spread for wider, smoother phantom images.[^1] Each element of the reverb gets its own direction and its own set of speaker gains:

* every tap of the densifier's cascade,
* every early reflection (42 in all, in groups at 0°, 15° and 30° of elevation),
* every delay line of the late tail (16 to 128),
* and each input channel of the Dry object.

On a rig with height speakers the directions are panned across triangles of speakers covering the sphere; on a flat rig (stereo, quad, 5.1, 7.1 or a ring) they are panned between neighbouring pairs by azimuth, and elevation has no effect. The gains are recalculated only when a control changes.

## SPATIAL ROUTING Header

| Control | Range | Default | What it does |
| - | - | - | - |
| **BYPASS** | off / on | off | Turns the multichannel routing off. ANTIVERB then runs its stereo chain on inputs 1 and 2. The SPATIAL cards grey out while bypassed. |

When the host bus has more outputs than the rig has speakers, the header shows how many outputs are unmapped; those outputs stay silent. When the rig has more speakers than the bus has outputs, the header reads **N speakers have no output**, and those speakers get no signal.

## INPUT

**shape** sets the layout a multichannel input's channels sit in before the objects place them. The readout beside it shows the channel count and the shape in use (for example **(6 ch · 5.1)**). Up to 8 input channels are placed, and an LFE input channel is routed to the Sub outputs and never panned. With no Sub in the rig, the LFE input is not played.

| shape | Channel directions |
| - | - |
| **Auto** (default) | Follows the host bus: a mono input becomes one source at the front centre, stereo becomes Pair, quad becomes Square, 5.0 and 5.1 become 5.1, 7.0 and 7.1 become 7.1, anything else becomes an even circle. |
| **Pair** | ±30° |
| **Triangle** | 0°, +120°, -120° |
| **Square** | ±45°, ±135° |
| **Pentagon**, **Hexagon**, **Circle** | An even ring over the actual channel count, named in the readout by its real number of corners. |
| **5.1** | L, R, C, Ls, Rs at -30°, +30°, 0°, -110°, +110° |
| **7.1** | -30°, +30°, 0°, -90°, +90°, -150°, +150° |

## OBJECTS

ANTIVERB has four objects, one per part of the sound: **Dry** (◇), **Density** (△), **Reflections** (○) and **Space** (▭). Each object is placed independently of the others. The table's columns are **az**, **el**, **wid**, **spr** and a power switch.

| Control | Range | Default | What it does |
| - | - | - | - |
| **azimuth** (az) | -180° to +180° | 0° | Direction around the listener. |
| **elevation** (el) | -90° to +90° | 0° | Height. Audible only on a rig with height speakers. *EXPERT view.* |
| **width** (wid) | 0° to 180° | 60° | How far the object's input channels fan out around its azimuth. At 60° the channels keep the input shape's own angles; at 0° they collapse onto the azimuth; at 180° the angles triple (a Pair goes to ±90°). *EXPERT view.* |
| **spread** (spr) | 0 to 100 % | Dry 0 %; others 30 % on stereo, 100 % on surround | How far each channel's image spreads around its direction, up to the whole sphere at 100 %. At 0 the image is a point. |
| **spatialize** (⏻) | off / on | on | Off sends the object's input channels straight to the matching outputs (channel 1 to output 1, and so on), unpanned. The object is then labelled **(DRY)** with a dashed outline in the rig view. |

For Density and Space, spread acts twice: it fans the taps or lines out around each channel's direction, and it widens each one's image.

### Layout-Aware Spread

ANTIVERB treats an output of two channels or fewer as **stereo** and anything wider as **surround**. Dry starts at 0 % spread on both. Density, Reflections and Space start at 30 % on stereo and 100 % on surround. When the output width changes from one class to the other, ANTIVERB moves any of those three spreads still at the old class's default to the new one. The change is one undo step. **DEFAULTS** in the LAYOUT header resets azimuth, elevation, width and spread of all four objects to the current class's defaults. See [Speaker Layout](/antiverb/interface/speaker-layout#layout-editor).

## FIELD

The field controls turn and tilt all four objects together, Dry included.

| Control | Range | Default | What it does |
| - | - | - | - |
| **rotation** | -180° to +180° | 0° | Turns every object around the listener. |
| **tilt (z)** | -45° to +45° | 0° | Adds to every object's elevation, toward the ceiling (positive) or the floor (negative). Needs height speakers. *EXPERT view.* |
| **front/back** | -100 % to +100 % | 0 % | Balances level between the speakers in front of the listener (positive) and the rest (negative), with equal power at 0. A speaker counts as front only when it is ahead of the listener, so side speakers at ±90° count as back. *EXPERT view.* |

In MINIMAL the FIELD card shows **rotation** and the **Width** macro, which moves the four object widths together.

## ROUTING

Open **\[+] ROUTING** (EXPERT view).

| Control | Range | Default | What it does |
| - | - | - | - |
| **Distance compensation** | off / on | on | Time alignment: per-speaker delay and gain so every speaker reaches the listener together and at the same level. See [Speaker Layout](/antiverb/interface/speaker-layout#time-alignment). |
| **SPREAD QUALITY** | 1 to 21 | 21 | Number of MDAP spread directions per source. Higher gives a smoother image. It has no effect at spread 0. |

## LISTENER

Open **\[+] LISTENER** (EXPERT view).

| Control | Range | Default |
| - | - | - |
| **listener X** (right +) | -10 to +10 m | 0 m |
| **listener Y** (front +) | -10 to +10 m | 0 m |
| **listener Z** (up +) | -10 to +10 m | 0 m |

The listener position is the point every direction and every speaker distance is measured from. Dragging the listener marker in the rig view moves X and Y.
