# Quick Start

## 1. Insert NOMN REMOTE

Insert the plugin as the last plugin on the track or bus you want to send. The header at the top of the window shows what START will send: the layout and channel count (**7.1.4 · 12 CH**), then the sample rate and codec (**48 kHz · IAMF FLAC 24-BIT · LOSSLESS**).

## 2. Choose how to send

Three controls sit under the header. Each is fixed while streaming, so set them before START.

| Control | Default | What it does |
| - | - | - |
| **ENCODE AS** | the bus layout | Sends the bus as it is, or as one of IAMF's downmixes of it. See [Layouts and ENCODE AS](/remote/streaming/layouts) |
| **LOW BANDWIDTH** | off | Off sends lossless FLAC; on sends Opus at 64 kbit/s a channel. See [FLAC and LOW BANDWIDTH](/remote/streaming/codecs) |
| **RELAY** | on | On sends through our server to up to 50 listeners; off connects one listener directly. See [Direct and Relay](/remote/streaming/direct-and-relay) |

These settings are saved with your DAW session. The Standalone app has a fourth control above them, **LAYOUT**, which sets the layout it streams; see [Installation](/remote/installation#standalone).

## 3. Press START

START creates a new session on the NOMN REMOTE server nearest to you and puts its link in **REMOTE LISTENER LINK**. The number in brackets in the caption is how many listeners the link takes: 50 with RELAY on, 1 with it off, and 4 on a trial once START has made the link. Press **COPY** and send the link by any means you like.

The status line under START shows where the stream stands:

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **CONNECTING TO SIGNALING** | the plugin is reaching our server |
| **WAITING FOR LISTENER** | the link is live and no one has opened it yet |
| **STREAMING · RELAY** or **STREAMING · DIRECT** | at least one listener is receiving the stream |
| **START REFUSED · ...** | nothing was sent; the reason follows |

## 4. The listener opens the link

The listener opens the link in a browser and presses Enter. The page decodes the stream, renders it to their output device, and shows the buffer depth and any interruptions. See [The listener page](/remote/listening/listener-page) for what they can do there, and send them the few commands they need (`route` and `test` for a multichannel room).

## 5. Press STOP

STOP ends the session. Listeners on the link see **This session has ended.**, and the link does not work again. The next START makes a new link.

## While you stream

* **LEVELS** meters each channel of the stream in dBFS, with the speaker labels underneath. A label inverts when that channel reaches 0 dBFS.
* **STREAM GAIN** sets the level of the streamed copy, from -24 dB to +12 dB. Your track's own output is unchanged. It is the plugin's only automatable parameter.
* **COST** shows what a relayed stream is costing as it runs. See [COST and SESSION](/remote/streaming/readouts).
* **SESSION** shows listeners, throughput, uptime, and the dropouts your listeners report.

If the plugin loses its connection to our server, it reconnects by itself into the same session, and listeners reconnect with it; the link stays the same and **RECONNECTS** counts each time.

## Receiving a session

The **SEND** and **RECEIVE** switch at the right of the header sets the plugin's direction. In RECEIVE it takes another session's listener link and plays that session out of the track. See [Receive mode](/remote/receiving/receive).
