Signal Chain

The Six Stages

Each stage has its own MIX and BYPASS. Warmth, Brightness and Presence sit on the TONE tab with the other pre-reverb tone controls, and they follow the Source stage’s MIX, BYPASS and SOLO.1 Top Boost, Low Cut and Dry Top follow the Densification stage’s.

Stereo Output

On a stereo output, or with SPATIAL bypassed, the stages run in series in this order: IN, Source, Densification, Early reflections, Diffusion, Late tail, Tone, OUT, soft saturator. DRY / WET then blends the result with the dry input, and the soft saturator runs once more. Each stage MIX crossfades between what enters the stage and the stage’s own output. Three stages shape that output in their own way:
  • Densification returns the source at direct (default 100 %) plus the cascade at sheen, so raising its MIX adds the cascade on top of the source.
  • Early reflections always returns its input with the reflections added, so its MIX works as the reflections’ level.
  • Late tail returns the tail only, so at Space MIX 100 % the tail replaces everything before it and only the master dry (DRY / WET below 100 %) survives beside it. Lower values keep the densified sound under the tail.

Multichannel Output

On an output of more than two channels with SPATIAL engaged, the chain splits into four objects (Dry, Density, Reflections and Space), each placed in the speaker field on its own. See Spatial Objects.
  • IN and Source run first, as on stereo.
  • Density writes the cascade (at its MIX) to its own object, together with the source it carries at direct.
  • Reflections writes the early reflections (at its MIX) to its own object.
  • Diffusion shapes only the signal that feeds the late tail; it has no object of its own.
  • Space writes the tail (at its MIX) to its own object, so its MIX works as the tail’s level.
  • Dry carries the input that each stage passes through, together with the master dry.
The objects are summed and pass through front/back balance, Tone (on every output, Dry included) and OUT; time alignment and the soft saturator then act on each output, followed by bass management, the output trims and the Sub ceiling.

Latency

ANTIVERB reports its latency to the host, and the figure changes with what is active:
  • On a stereo output with Densification active and its MIX above 0, Densification adds a short delay (about 50 samples), and the resonance smoother adds 1,024 samples while its amount is above 0.
  • On a multichannel output with Densification active and its MIX above 0, the resonance smoother adds the same 1,024 samples while its amount is above 0, and time alignment adds the delay it needs to line up the nearest and farthest speakers.
  • On a multichannel output with at least one Small output and one Sub, the Sub ceiling adds 1.5 ms to every output. See Speaker Layout.
ANTIVERB holds its dry signal back by the same amount, so once the host compensates, the dry and the processed sound stay aligned with each other and with the other tracks.

SOLO

SOLO on one stage bypasses every other stage. The soloed stage keeps its own MIX, so a soloed stage at MIX 0 plays the source unchanged. SOLO leaves the master dry (DRY / WET below 100 %) and the source passed through Densification at direct in place. distance and air absorption keep working while another stage is soloed; only the Source BYPASS turns them off.

Parameter Changes While Playing

MIX, BYPASS, DRY / WET, sheen and direct are smoothed. Most other densifier controls (count, shape, depth, length, the envelope, the smoother, the bass split and the densifier EQ) rebuild the cascade when they change: the densified sound dips for a moment and fades back in on the new settings, without a click. On SPACE, pre-delay crossfades to its new time, the band decay times and crossovers glide to their new values, and density, shape, the diffuser and colorless rebuild the network with a crossfade. Set the rebuilding controls before playback, and automate the smoothed ones.

Footnotes

  1. Warmth, Brightness and Presence are inaudible while the Source MIX is at its default of 0. ↩
